Qianling Mountain Park

Qianling Mountain Park is located northwest in the central district of Guiyang. There is a legend. In the eleventh year of the Qing Dynasty under the rule of Emperor Kang Xi (1672), Monk Chi Song, the founder of Hongfu Temple, planted an old pine tree upside down on the mountain, but the old pine tree survived like magic. Therefore, the mountain was named Qianling Mountain, to mean “a place with intelligence and outstanding people for collecting the spirituality of Guizhou”. In the park, there are rolling hills and valleys. In spite of the wavy terrain, the hills rise gradually with ladders and stone steps on them. It is easy and enjoyable to climb the hills, listening to the birds singing in the refreshing wind. When reaching the highest spot of the Park, “Kanzhu Pavilion” (calligraphy work written by Master Liu Haisu in 1986) on Xiangwang Hill, the tourists can overlook the whole Guiyang known as “city of forest”, to enjoy the unique scenery “without any piece of level land larger than three square feet”. Here, Dong Biwu made a poem that “I challenge the first mountain in the south of Guizhou successfully. Though old I still have a strong body. Here, the springs are clear and leaves begin to fall from the ancient trees, and the two mountains stand out of the temple like guards.” Zhu De also wrote a poem, “Overlooking Guiyang from Qianling Mountain, the city has changed and developed after ten years of construction. The young people here are all of exceptional abilities, who go all out to build their hometown. There are range upon range of peaks and knolls, towering ancient trees, clear springs and fantastic rocks here and there on Qianling Mountain, as well as groups of monkeys and flocks of birds. It is said that there are more than 1500 kinds of trees and flowers, over 1000 kinds of famous and expensive herbs and more than 50 kinds of common birds here —- “surrounded by dense bamboo forests, fresh green pine trees and cedars and fragrant laurels”. “From the cracks of rocks, the trees grow so tall, with dense leaves covering the sky. Walking in the forest, the scarves and shoes of people are all dyed in the green color. With a sudden breeze, the rustling of trees sounds gradually, and the birds in the mountain fly up and down, singing different songs.” In the ancient and distant peace, there is a sense of natural prosperity. Just by a wall and a gate, it instantly isolates the forest from the city, the peace from the noise and the clean spirit from the earthliness. Perhaps, such unique scenery with mountains and forests in the city can only be seen in Guiyang.
