Three Pagodas

Located in the north of Dali Ancient City, the Three Pagodas are one of wonders in the Chongcheng Monastery that was first built by the 10th king of the Nanzhao Kingdom in the Tang Dynasty (middle 9th century).

The Three Pagodas were built in different times. The main pagoda, Qianxun pagoda which is named after its height( 69.13 meters, Xun in old times was a length measurement, Qian means one thousand, one thousand of Xun equals to about 69.13 meters exactly), was built when the Chongsheng Monastery was first built and has 16 stories. It is of typical architectural style of the Tang Dynasty; at the pedestal of the pagoda are engraved four Chinese Characters "Yong Zhen Shan Chuan" (meaning everlasting sovereignty and peace) in the handwriting of Mu Shijie, the grandson of Mu Ying (the Senior Duke of Qian of the Ming Dynasty). On the south and north sides of Qianxun pagoda stand another two smaller ones of octagonal shape with closed eaves; each has 10 tiers with a height of 43 meters. With Buddhist shrines on every storey, the Three Pagodas appear pagodas with even-number stories while those in Central China are with odd-numbered stories, for which it remains a mystery to people.
