Zhouzhuang
Zhouzhuang is the No. 1 ancient water town in China classified as an AAAAA scenic area by the China National Tourism Administration. The picturesque“small bridges, flowing water and beautiful houses” landscapes of Zhou Zhuang are well preserved, with original architecture and ancient residential houses”.
Over 60% of the dwellings in the town were built in the Ming and Qing dynasties and there are nearly a hundred classical courtyards and more than 60 tile-carving gate houses, the most representative of which are Shen’s House and Zhang’s House. Some of the waterways can be connected to the inner courtyards directly and the courtyard owners could get on the boat indoors.
There are a number of ancient bridges in Zhouzhuang and the one with the highest popularity is the Twin Bridge (Shuangqiao). Zhouzhuang has also preserved 14 ancient bridges with varied characteristics, which commonly constitute a picturesque landscape painting of water town including “small bridge, flowing water and beautiful houses”.
